Luna Pearl and the Bermuda Experience

Rob - USA

There were some tight weather windows and we were forced to go in less than ideal conditions. We made decent headway in 3-4 meter seas and 20-30knt winds, but ended up getting caught out about 60 miles north of Bermuda. We were forced to launch a drogue and riding out 7-8 meter waves and 45 kts winds for a day and a half. We got pushed about 200 miles northeast and a five day trip took eight. Luna Pearl really handled it well. When we sailed the big seas the boat always felt well balanced and secure. Inside you could hardly tell the ferocity of the wind. The boat was pitched with all angles of waves but we never felt overpowered. When we set the drogue and got stern to the wind things got eerily calm. Amazing how we just rode up and down the 8 meter waves.
Once in Bermuda we found out the two boat on a similar track were lost. And the day after we arrived another performance cat came to St George Harbor de-masted. We had all been pretty nervous on the trip but seeing the de-masted boat the next day made us all appreciate how well Luna Pearl handled everything!
Overall I’m super impressed with the boat. She can power through big seas and ride out just about anything. I would feel safe going just about anywhere in her. And when you get her in calm to moderate seas she will cut through the water at true wind speed. Just a joy to sail!
